Season Completion & Quitting Policy

The ESM Athletic Department enforces a firm policy regarding team commitment. Once placed on a roster, a student-athlete is expected to complete the season through its absolute end (including post-season play).

• Voluntary Departure Penalty: If a student voluntarily quits a team, they are immediately ineligible to participate in any other sport during the subsequent season (e.g., quitting a winter sport makes you ineligible for a spring sport). This restriction carries over across school years (e.g., quitting in spring affects the following fall).
• Voluntary Departure Consequences: If a student voluntarily quits a team, they will be immediately ineligible to participate in a different sport in the subsequent season.
• Eligibility Review Panel: To address or waive this subsequent-season restriction, a mandatory meeting must be held including the student-athlete, the current coach (of the sport they quit), the future coach, and the Athletic Director. This designated panel will review the circumstances and determine the student-athlete's potential eligibility moving forward. If a unanimous agreement is reached by all panel members, this policy may be waived.
• Permanent Sport Ineligibility: Any student-athlete who quits a sport will remain permanently ineligible to compete in that specific sport for the remainder of their high school career unless a panel (above) determines otherwise. A parent or guardian must be a part of this appeal.
• Carry-Over Provision: Quitting a sport carries administrative penalties that do not reset with the school year; restrictions will carry over to the fall season of the following school year.
